We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Jacques Bertrand, co-director and co-founder of the Postcor Lab, has been named one of the recipients of the prestigious 2024 Dean’s Research Excellence Awards by the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts & Science!
This annual award recognizes mid-career researchers who have demonstrated exceptional impact and sustained excellence in their respective disciplines. Dr. Bertrand’s groundbreaking work on ethnic conflict, nationalism, and war-to-peace transitions, particularly in Southeast Asia, exemplifies the innovative and influential research celebrated by this honor.
Dr. Bertrand, a professor in the Department of Political Science and the director of the Collaborative Master’s Specialization in Contemporary East and Southeast Asian Studies, has long been recognized for his outstanding contributions to the study of ethnic conflict, nationalism, and secessionism, particularly in Southeast Asia. His work, which includes influential publications such as Winning by Process: The State and Neutralization of Ethnic Minorities in Myanmar (with Ardeth Thawnghmung and Alexandre Pelletier, Cornell) and Democracy and Nationalist Struggles in Southeast Asia: From Secessionist Mobilization to Conflict Resolution (Cambridge), has made a profound contribution to advancing knowledge in the field.
